Love Island has been the UK’s most popular dating show since it was first aired in 2015. It was based on a similar show, Celebrity Love Island, in which twelve single celebrities spent five weeks together on an island in Fiji. A series of public votes evicted singles and couples from the show throughout the series with the winning couple collecting a combined £100,000. Celebrity Love Island aired for two seasons and was originally hosted by Patrick Kielty and Kelly Brook before Fearne Cotton took over as the host for the second series.
Nine years after Celebrity Love Island was cancelled due to poor ratings, the show returned but with the contestants being made up of non-celebs and was an instant hit.
Love Island is now an international franchise with no less than 22 versions of the show being created across various countries and regions around the world.

Love Island UK
The UK version of Love Island is by far the most popular of the franchise and is where the show began all the way back in 2015. For eight weeks, fans of the show can enjoy episodes six of the seven evenings of the week which often sparks conversation and controversy across social media.
Over Love Island UK’s eight series, the structure of the show has mostly remained the same with a number of contestants entering the villa and leaving throughout the series due to public and in-house votes. There was the introduction of a second villa in the third series to spice thing up by tempting the Islanders to stray from their partners with new contestants.
There have also been several semi-famous contestants, or those related to celebrities, featured on the show over the years such as Gemma Owen, daughter of England footballer Michael Owen, Jack Keating, son of singer and Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating, Dani Dyer, daughter of EastEnders star Danny Dyer, Tommy Fury, brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, along with many others.
When Is Love Island UK 2023?
Series eight of Love Island UK concluded at the beginning of August 2022 but fans of the show have a treat in line for next year.
For the first time in the shows history, Love Island will return for not one but two series in 2023.
As usual, there will be a summer edition of the show which will take place in Mallorca and which usually airs towards the beginning of June. However, there will also be a second series aired earlier in 2023.
Winter Love Island 2023
January may not be the most enjoyable time of the year in the UK but fans will be uplifted to hear that a winter edition of the show will take place in 2023.
Hitting our UK TV screens in January 2023, Love Island series 9 will take place in South Africa. Other than the contestants being housed in a villa as usual, not much else has been given away at the present time but executive producer Mike Spencer has said:
“We can look forward to more romances, bromances and everything in between as we embark on another epic year of love.”
Love Island USA
On the back of the huge success of the UK version, Love Island USA was created in 2019 and is currently on it’s fourth series.
The first series of Love Island USA was filmed in Fiji with the show moving to The Cromwell Las Vegas for series 2, Hawaii for series 3 and finally Santa Barbara in California for the latest series.
The show has a very similar format to the UK version with contestants aiming to couple up with each other to avoid being dumped from the villa. The couple who win the show share a combined prize of $100,000.
Love Island Germany
Another popular version of the show is Love Island Germany which is currently on it’s seventh series and is the longest running show of the franchise other than the UK.
The name of the show is ‘Love Island – Heiße Flirts & wahre Liebe’ which translates to ‘Love Island – Hot Flirts & True Love’ and was first aired in 2017 when 23 islanders competed with Elena Miras and Jan Sokolowsky ending the debut series as the winning couple.
Love Island Australia
Love Island is the second most popular reality TV show ever aired in Australia and first hit screens in 2018. Reality shows based around love and dating have exploded in popularity in Aus over recent years with other successful shows including Love on the Spectrum, Married at First Sight Australia, Beauty and the Geek Australia and several others.
The Australia version of Love Island has built up a reputation for being far more dramatic and raunchier than the UK version of the show as many UK fans were made aware of when choosing to watch the Aussie version when the 2020 UK series was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Love Island Australia will air its fourth series in 2022 which is expected to run throughout November and December.
