Whilst it is fair to say that building accumulators is an area in which many exchanges lag behind the bookies, Smarkets does still stand out for being the only one of the big 4 exchanges which allows the building of multiples bets which can be both backed and laid (as of the time of writing).
As can be seen above, placing multiple bets at Smarkets is as simple as adding 2 or more selections to the betslip, whenever this happens the “Multiples” section will appear below the betslip allowing a combined bet to be placed (at combined odds of 3.8 in the example above).
Should you wish to lay your multiples bet (i.e. say that it won't be an overall winner) then this can be easily done by flipping the “BUY” switch to “SELL” as is shown below:
Notably, whilst having the ability to lay multiples bets is a great feature, we do seem to be offered higher odds laying than when we were backing. In the example above this is odds of 3.8 for backing versus 4.4 for laying, therefore suggesting that Smarkets are working an additional profit margin into this (admittedly useful) service!
Finally, before comparing the value of multiples products at Smarkets to other leading exchanges and bookies, here are a few other useful things to be aware of when placing multiples bets:
1) When using Smarkets we can only have a single selection per event in our multiple, this means if I was to add Arsenal to win versus Brentford then I could not also add both teams to score (BTTS) to the multiples bet as well (we would get a warning like the below):
2) There is a maximum limit of 10 selections per multiples bet.
3) Multiples cannot contain selections from ante-post horse racing nor any other long-term running market (e.g. the Champions League winners).
4) You can place both back and lay multiples with Smarkets. If you wish to place a lay multiple, you must add the selections to your bet slip as back bets first and select to lay them after.
Comparing Smarkets Multiples with Other Exchanges
Comparing the multiples offering at Smarkets to some other exchange betting providers should give us an idea of the value that is on offer. Starting with exchange betting leader, Betfair, we can see the same multiples bet as was built at Smarkets in the previous section of this review:
As can be seen above, with total odds of 3.39 versus 3.8 at Smarkets, Betfair do not quite match up with Smarkets when looking at the total payout from this particular ACCA. It should also be noted that, unlike Smarkets, when building multiples bets at Betfair we must make use of the Betfair Sportsbook product rather than the exchange itself. Use of the sportsbook, in this case, means that we do get the added benefit of being able to cash out any multiples bets but, unlike at Smarkets, also lack the ability to lay these multiples bets.
Moving on to another well-known betting exchange, Betdaq, and we see the same bet combining Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal has been built up:
As can be seen above, Betdaq offers odds of 3.46 for this same accumulator, slightly better than Betfair in this case but still noticeably short of Smarkets at 3.8!
With odds aside, whilst Betdaq doesn't offer the ability to lay their multiples bets like Smarkets do, they do still make use of their sportsbook for facilitating such bets meaning they also offer the addition of a cash-out feature, something currently missing from the multiples offerings at Smarkets.
Comparing Smarkets Multiples to Bookies
When compared to other well-known betting exchanges it is clear that Smarkets have a very good multiples offering, an offering perhaps marred only slightly by the lack of any cash-out functionality (something readily available when placing single bets on the exchange).
When looking at a leading bookie on both the high street and online, in this case, William Hill, we see the following odds on our Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal accumulator:
As can be seen above, with odds of 3.66, William Hill does in this case offer some very competitive odds (beating both Betfair Sportsbook and Betdaq as per the comparisons made in the previous section).
Whilst these odds of 3.66 are indeed competitive, they still fall behind the total value provided at Smarkets (paying odds of 3.8 on this particular bet).
Moving on and other multiples betting features including cash-out and the ability to add multiple selections form the same event to an ACCA (i.e. a “bet builder”) mean that William Hill still provides a good match for Smarkets in this case despite the slightly lower odds and the inability to lay the accumulator.
If getting the absolute highest payout for your accumulator is the key thing you are looking for then Smarkets is looking very hard to beat, if you value other functionality such as cash-out, the ability to make complicated “bet builder” ACCAs and other features such as ACCA insurance then a bookie might still be the way to go!
Live Streaming and Match Stats
Unfortunately, Smarkets do not currently offer live video streaming coverage of any sporting events.
Naturally, this doesn't distract from the great exchange betting functionality on offer nor the excellent multiples betting product which we have just covered, but it does mean if you like to see your horse run or bet on a football game as it is being played out then you will need to make alternative arrangements
