About

Smarkets is a leading betting exchange and since its inception in 2008 has been providing access to a wide selection of betting markets, this is done with an emphasis on simplicity, ease of use and a process of getting bets matched at the best odds.

Whilst clearly still in the shadows of leading exchange provider Betfair, Smarkets have come a long way in recent years and alongside their leading low commission rate of just 2% they now offer some very active markets and are starting to excel in top sports including horse racing and football.

In this review, we will look at Smarkets in more depth and explain how this platform could help you get the most from your exchange betting. A great place to start is with the very generous €10 risk-free bonus, this is available to any new customer simply for signing up and depositing just €20 to get started with!

Range of Sports

Smarkets offer a wide range of leading sports, political and special event markets to bet on, everything from popular European football leagues, horse racing and golf through to NBA basketball, NFL football and even the next US President all readily available to bet on!

Being a betting exchange means that you can, of course, take advantage of generally better odds, bet for or against selections in any given market as well as make use of many other great features including in-play betting, cash-out and see live stats which are available for selected sports.

Horse Racing

Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and an event in which Smarkets have clearly worked hard to provide a first-class exchange offering!

This offering starts with access to a good selection of meetings both at home and worldwide, this includes favourites such as the Irish Grand National, the Galway Races and the Punchestown Festival amongst many international favourites including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders Cup.

A well-designed horse racing homepage builds further on this great selection of races making Smarkets ideal for betting on the big events for the current day in addition to any bigger events ante-post. Finding and betting on specific races by country and/or racetrack is also easy thanks to the international racecard selection table as can be seen below:

smarkets horse racing

Once on a racing exchange page we can both back and lay horses, make use of the built-in cash-out button and, when necessary, see form and stats information for many of the horses running in the race:

smarkets racing markets

Whilst live video of the races is not available, as it is at main rivals Betfair, Smarkets does still provide a very credible racing offering that is easy to make use of and offers great odds alongside good levels of liquidity and market depth making for a solid horse racing choice!

Football / Soccer

Alongside the ever-popular horse racing offering, football is another popular sport in which Smarkets are clearly working hard to provide a first-rate betting experience.

Starting off with the main football homepage itself and we can easily access many of the world's professional leagues including the League of Ireland Premier Division plus major European and worldwide leagues including The English Premier League, the Italian Serie A and the Argentinian Primera Division amongst many others.

smarkets football odds

Looking at any given individual football event itself and we see very clean and easy to use exchange betting pages available, these pages allow us to back and lay many markets within any given fixture and commonly available choices include:

  • 1x2 (Match Odds)

  • Correct Score

  • Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

  • Goals Under / Over (0.5 / 1.5 / 2.5 / 3.5 / 4.5 etc.)

  • Asian Handicap (-2.5 / -2 / -1.5 etc.)

  • Half-Time / Full-Time

  • Second-Half Over / Under

  • Winner & BTTS

  • First Goalscorer

  • Plus many more…..

Other useful exchange features which are available when football betting at Smarkets include use of the cash-out system both pre-game and well into the live fixture (providing there is liquidity to bet against) plus the excellent live graphics system which shows live stats for many games alongside running commentary of what is happening on the field at any given time:

smarkets football stats

As a growing football betting provider, we also are starting to see some very good liquidity at Smarkets in recent years and in many cases on par with the levels seen at Betfair! As a result of this, despite not having live football coverage of some leagues as Betfair does, Smarkets is becoming a great place to bet on the football live and often features great in-play odds and plenty of available money to bet against for the most popular football leagues.

Golf

Yet another popular sport featuring solid coverage at Smarkets is golf, this means full coverage of many professional tournaments is provided including the Irish PGA Championship and the Irish Open alongside many other professional events worldwide such as the The Masters, the Australian Open and the US PGA Championship amongst many others.

smarkets golf

As with other sports, we can easily access the golf betting markets via the well-designed golf homepage, make use of the cash-out features both before the event and whilst in-play and bet on many golf markets including:

  • Winner

  • Top 5 / 10 / 20

  • 1st round leader

  • 1st Round top 5 / 10 / 20

  • Top American / European / GB player

  • Selected players to make the cut

  • Plus many more...

Politics

Political betting is becoming ever more popular in recent years with events such as Brexit in the UK and Donald Trump becoming the 45th US President continuing to keep political interests high.

smarkets politics

The Smarkets political betting homepage (as can be seen above) helps to highlight the strong political offering available here with good coverage of popular worldwide events including:

  • Year of Next Irish General Election

  • Next Irish General Election (Most Seats)

  • 2024 US Presidential Election

  • 2022 French Presidential Election

  • Next German Chancellor

  • Plus many more...

eSports

eSports are continuing to grow in popularity and are providing an up-and-coming betting opportunity for many thanks to the strong coverage available at Smarkets.

If eSports are of interest then Smarkets should be on your shortlist given the great range of markets available and games covered, these include CS:GO, Call of Duty and League of Legends amongst many other big titles.

Multiples and ACCAs

For many years the traditional bookie has been the go to place for placing accumulators and system bets, bring on recent years and many now also offer special “bet builder” systems allowing virtually any type of multiples bet to be built across many different events.

Whilst it is fair to say that building accumulators is an area in which many exchanges lag behind the bookies, Smarkets does still stand out for being the only one of the big 4 exchanges which allows the building of multiples bets which can be both backed and laid (as of the time of writing).

smarkets multiples

As can be seen above, placing multiple bets at Smarkets is as simple as adding 2 or more selections to the betslip, whenever this happens the “Multiples” section will appear below the betslip allowing a combined bet to be placed (at combined odds of 3.8 in the example above).

Should you wish to lay your multiples bet (i.e. say that it won't be an overall winner) then this can be easily done by flipping the “BUY” switch to “SELL” as is shown below:

smarkets accumulators

Notably, whilst having the ability to lay multiples bets is a great feature, we do seem to be offered higher odds laying than when we were backing. In the example above this is odds of 3.8 for backing versus 4.4 for laying, therefore suggesting that Smarkets are working an additional profit margin into this (admittedly useful) service!

Finally, before comparing the value of multiples products at Smarkets to other leading exchanges and bookies, here are a few other useful things to be aware of when placing multiples bets:

1) When using Smarkets we can only have a single selection per event in our multiple, this means if I was to add Arsenal to win versus Brentford then I could not also add both teams to score (BTTS) to the multiples bet as well (we would get a warning like the below):

smarkets acca

2) There is a maximum limit of 10 selections per multiples bet.

3) Multiples cannot contain selections from ante-post horse racing nor any other long-term running market (e.g. the Champions League winners).

4) Multiples can be both backed and laid (although if planning to lay a multiple then all selections must be added to the betslip as back bets first, the multiple can then be laid when finalised).

5) Finally, and something of a technicality, but Smarkets make clear they facilitate multiples betting by matching the bet themselves. They also state that multiples might not be an exact accumulation and that the laying of any multiples might be subject to sufficient liquidity on the exchange at the time of the request.

Comparing Smarkets Multiples with Other Exchanges

Comparing the multiples offering at Smarkets to some other exchange betting providers should give us an idea of the value that is on offer. Starting with exchange betting leader, Betfair, we can see the same multiples bet as was built at Smarkets in the previous section of this review:

betfair acca

As can be seen above, with total odds of 3.39 versus 3.8 at Smarkets, Betfair do not quite match up with Smarkets when looking at the total payout from this particular ACCA. It should also be noted that, unlike Smarkets, when building multiples bets at Betfair we must make use of the Betfair Sportsbook product rather than the exchange itself. Use of the sportsbook, in this case, means that we do get the added benefit of being able to cash out any multiples bets but, unlike at Smarkets, also lack the ability to lay these multiples bets.

Moving on to another well-known betting exchange, Betdaq, and we see the same bet combining Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal has been built up:

betdaq acca

As can be seen above, Betdaq offers odds of 3.46 for this same accumulator, slightly better than Betfair in this case but still noticeably short of Smarkets at 3.8!

With odds aside, whilst Betdaq doesn't offer the ability to lay their multiples bets like Smarkets do, they do still make use of their sportsbook for facilitating such bets meaning they also offer the addition of a cash-out feature, something currently missing from the multiples offerings at Smarkets.

Comparing Smarkets Multiples to Bookies

When compared to other well-known betting exchanges it is clear that Smarkets have a very good multiples offering, an offering perhaps marred only slightly by the lack of any cash-out functionality (something readily available when placing single bets on the exchange).

When looking at a leading bookie on both the high street and online, in this case, William Hill, we see the following odds on our Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal accumulator:

william hill acca

As can be seen above, with odds of 3.66, William Hill does in this case offer some very competitive odds (beating both Betfair Sportsbook and Betdaq as per the comparisons made in the previous section).

Whilst these odds of 3.66 are indeed competitive, they still fall behind the total value provided at Smarkets (paying odds of 3.8 on this particular bet).

Moving on and other multiples betting features including cash-out and the ability to add multiple selections form the same event to an ACCA (i.e. a “bet builder”) mean that William Hill still provides a good match for Smarkets in this case despite the slightly lower odds and the inability to lay the accumulator.

If getting the absolute highest payout for your accumulator is the key thing you are looking for then Smarkets is looking very hard to beat, if you value other functionality such as cash-out, the ability to make complicated “bet builder” ACCAs and other features such as ACCA insurance then a bookie might still be the way to go!

Live Streaming and Match Stats

Unfortunately, at of time of writing, Smarkets does not offer any live video streaming coverage of any of the sports or events they cover!

Naturally, this doesn't distract from the great exchange betting functionality on offer nor the excellent multiples betting product which we have just covered, but it does mean if you like to see your horse run or bet on a football game as it is being played out then you will need to make alternative arrangements (Betfair, on the other hand, have extensive live streaming coverage which might make it a better choice of exchange in such circumstances).

With live video aside, they do offer live commentary and stats for certain events via their live graphics boxes, often found on the top right of any eligible events including many of the world’s professional football leagues as can be seen below:

smarkets match stats

These live graphics boxes show live commentary of what is happening on the field (e.g. a corner or penalty being taken), as well as other useful stats including the number of shots on goal, red or yellow cards issued and how many substitutions have been made, all in real time!

The Smarkets Website & Smartphone Apps

An easy to use website and app is essential for any exchange operator and forms a key piece of providing a first class betting experience!

Thankfully, this is an area in which the betting exchange has excelled thanks to their well designed and easy to navigate website and apps, both of which feature light or dark colour schemes and are available for both iOS and Android smartphones.

smarkets website

If you are familiar with the leading betting exchange, Betfair, you will notice that far from simply trying to emulate the same look and feel, Smarkets have instead taken the design down their own road and with this created a very different look and feel.

Despite looking a little different, the website is very easy to navigate and make use of, particularly if your sport is a little less common thanks to the main sports menu which makes filtering out events via the type of sport, country or competition very quick and easy.

They also offer the ability to make bookmark certain sports meaning they will be easily accessible from the favourites menu the next time you visit.

All in all, a well-designed service and, thanks to the smartphone apps, one which will be of great benefit for those who like to bet both at home and then regularly check, adjust or even cash-out bets whilst on the go!

Smarkets Casino and Games

At the time of writing, Smarkets don't offer any casino games, live casino, slots or any other non-sports gambling via their website or mobile apps!

Whilst this might seem like a negative for some, it does help show that Smarkets are clearly focused, first and foremost, on providing a first class exchange betting service above all else!

Account Settings

Smarkets offer access to in-depth betting history and transaction reports, this can help in tracking your betting activity and seeing exactly what any profit or loss status might be over a given time frame.

smarkets account

Most traditional bookies will offer some way of checking betting history, but many lack the tools and reports to easily see profit and losses over time. Smarkets have gone a lot further in this regard and have built a very advanced yet user-friendly reporting screen ideal for keeping control on any betting activity.
