Matchbook have been offering an exchange betting service since 2004, one which provides strong coverage of many different sports, special events and political markets. Alongside this strong sports coverage is a first class pools betting and casino service, both of which combine to help make for an all round solid exchange betting experience.

Whilst notably smaller than market leaders Betfair, Matchbook does still perform very well on popular sports including football and horse racing, add on to this a market leading 2% flat rate commission and Matchbook competes directly on value with leading exchanges Smarkets, Betdaq and Betfair!

Before getting into this review and discovering why Matchbook can be a great exchange to bet on, we should first mention the three very generous sign-up offers available to new customers making use of Matchbook for the very first time. These offers include 30 days of 0% commission on the exchange, a £10 free bet on the greyhound racing or £15 in bonus bets for betting on the exchange itself (more details in the section below).

The second welcome offer, providing 0% commission for the first 30 days on the exchange, can be obtained by signing-up via this link and entering the code COMMFREE (be aware that this 30 day 0% commission period will begin from the date of first registration).

NB - Be sure to check the T&C’s carefully for each offer and make sure to deposit via debit card to be eligible for any of the above offers! Whilst Neteller, Skrill and PaySafe are available for deposits, they will exclude you from the welcome offers when initially used for depositing your first money into Matchbook!

Range of Sports Available at Matchbook

As a well established betting exchange, Matchbook provides great coverage of many popular sports, special events and political markets across the UK, Ireland, Europe and further afield across the rest of the world.

Popular sports including horse racing, football, tennis and golf form a solid core for Matchbook with many other worldwide sports including Gaelic Football, NBA Basketball, NHL Hockey and NFL American Football coming together to make Matchbook a great palace for betting on many international events.

Some popular sports categories available at Matchbook include:

Horse Racing

As one of the most popular sports across both Ireland and the UK, it is great to see that horse racing is a sport in which Matchbook clearly takes very seriously!

matchbook horse racing

A dedicated horse racing homepage (as can be seen above) provides easy access to all big race meetings on the current day as it does any meetings the following day as well. Furthermore, easy access to other big international meetings across many other big racing nations including Australia, South Africa, France, New Zealand and the USA is also available via the tabs at the top of the main page.

Also on this horse racing homepage is the main race card section (as can be seen below), this is a grid-style layout that highlights all big races for the current day and makes accessing any race with just a single click easy:

matchbook race card

Clicking into any individual race, in this case the 16:30 at Gowran Park, and we see that the well designed betting pages make finding any given horse easy as they do placing either a back or lay bet on any of the available runners.

matchbook racing

Moving away from the 16:30 at Gowran Park, we see that easily moving on to other races at the same meeting or at another meeting on the same day is easy thanks to the first-class horse racing navigation system.

Made up of two parts, this navigation system features a time schedule bar for the current meeting atop any betting pages plus a “Today’s Racing” racing quick-links box to the right of the page. Both of these elements combine to help make finding any race from any meeting (even across different countries) impressively easy at Matchbook!

matchbook horse racing

Where this page does fall down slightly is in the lack of form, stats and runner information which is not available from within this page (as it is on competitors such as Betfair). Additionally, Matchbook, as of yet, does not provide access to any live video feeds of the horse racing (feeds which are currently available only on the greyhound racing at time of writing).

Football / Soccer

Another firm favourite and a sport in which Matchbook continues to refine and improve their offering of, football is a popular choice with some great coverage at Matchbook!

Given this popularity, it is great to see that Matchbook are clearly taking the sport seriously and offering good coverage of many top leagues including Irish Premier Division, the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga and the German Bundesliga amongst many other top competitions across both Europe and the rest of the world.

matchbook football

A look at the main football homepage (as can be seen above) and we see that we have easy access, via the tabs at the top of the page, to all popular leagues with any upcoming games, games already in-play or about to start plus a list of featured football games filtered by country and league.

Once on the exchange betting page for any individual game, in this case Brentford vs Arsenal (below), we can see the main betting markets themselves plus more tabs at the top of this page for accessing the full range of available markets to bet on, all of which can, of course, facilitate both backing and laying of the selections within.

matchbook soccer

Whilst Matchbook don't currently provide live streaming of any football events (like rivals Betfair do), they do offer a very useful live stats and commentary box (as can be seen above) which shows in-game commentary for the game alongside live stats such as the numbers of cards, corners, shots on goal and substitutions in the fixture so far.

Finally, when looking at any given football event, as above, we often see many available markets to bet on, these include:

  • 1x2 (match odds)

  • Correct Score

  • Both Teams to Score (BTTS)

  • Half-Time / Full-Time

  • Goals Under / Over (0.5 / 1.5 / 2.5 / 3.5 / 4.5 etc.)

  • Asian Handicap (-2.5 / -2 / -1.5 etc.)

  • Winner & BTTS

  • Plus many more…..

Whilst not quite matching the market leaders Betfair on liquidity or market depth just yet, Matchbook do still provide a solid football offering with plenty of exchange betting activity and cash-out opportunities. Altogether, this means getting football bets matched and cashed-out at Matchbook is not usually too much trouble in most cases.

A great football offering in the making and at just 2% flat rate commission, a great place for those seeking the best value football bets!

Golf is another very popular sport which features good coverage by Matchbook, this includes coverage of top tournaments including the Irish PGA Championship and the Irish Open plus big tournaments from further afield including the US Masters, Australian Open and the Ryder Cup amongst others.

matchbook golf

In fact, when it comes to golf coverage, we see all four majors present in addition to coverage from all of the main golf tours including the PGA Tour, the Asian Tour and the European Tour amongst others.

A good range of golf markets are also provided including:

  • Winner

  • 1st round leader

  • Top 5 / 10 / 20

  • 1st Round top 5 / 10 / 20

  • Selected players to make the cut

  • And more...

Political betting is a popular new mainstay thanks to many unexpected political events of late, these include Brexit happening in the UK and Donald Trump, against all odds, becoming the 45th US President!

Matchbook clearly have some awareness of this political betting popularity and currently provide coverage of some of the biggest political events in the world, this currently includes the next UK general election result and the next US President.

matchbook politics

Unfortunately, despite offering such coverage (as can be seen above), Matchbook does seem to struggle with market depth and liquidity on these mainstream political markets, especially when compared to close rivals Smarkets and market leaders Betfair (both of which have very active political betting offerings).

Overall, if you are looking for good political betting opportunities then Smarkets or Betfair might still be a better choice (although bear in mind that markets such as the next US President will become much more active in the days leading up to the vote meaning Matchbook should still be worth a look).

Tennis is another popular sport which enjoys good coverage at Matchbook, this includes coverage of many of the world's big professional events including Wimbledon, The Irish Open, The French Open and the US Open amongst many others.

A good range of markets is also available for such events, often including:

  • Match Winner

  • Set Betting

  • Games (Over / Under)

  • Total (Over / Under)

  • First Set Winner

  • Plus others...

Whilst market leaders Betfair do go further than Matchbook in also offering tennis stats, live video of certain events plus more liquidity and market depth overall, this is still a good set-up on offer from Matchbook and definitely worth a look if tennis betting is your thing!

Multiples and ACCAs at Matchbook

In addition to single bets available on the exchange, Matchbook also offers players the ability to make multiples bets with up to 10 individual legs supported per bet.

matchbook multiples

As can be seen above, by simply adding 2 or more selections to our betslip we will be given the choice to switch to the multiples tab and, in-turn, the selections in the betslip will be rolled into a single accumulator bet. In this example I have Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea all to win at combined odds of 3.19.

NB - As of time of writing, multiples bets at Matchbook can only be made up of back bets, if laying of multiples is important then check out our review of Smarkets (who do support laying multiples) by clicking here!

Unfortunately, as with the other main betting exchanges including Betfair and Smarkets, Matchbook multiples are limited in that they only support a single selection per event, this means, for example, if we try add both teams to score for one of the games above we will be refused the bet:

matchbook accas

We are also restricted in that we (as of yet) have no ability to cash-out the multiples bets either before a leg starts or when an event is in play as is available at some other providers.

Such restrictions naturally make multiples betting at Matchbook slightly more restrictive than the modern “bet builder” systems available at most traditional bookies, but if your multiples requirements are fairly simple then this is still a valuable service to have built-in to the betting exchange!

NB - Whilst in the example above we saw a treble, Matchbook do in-fact support many other types of multiples bets depending on what selections are in the betslip, these can include:

  • Double / Treble / 4+ leg accumulators

  • Patent

  • Trixie

  • Yankee

  • Lucky 15

  • Lucky 31

  • Super Yankee

  • Heinz

  • Lucky 63

  • Super Heinz

  • Goliath

Before comparing the multiples betting at some other leading exchanges and bookies, there are a few important things to note when placing an accumulator bet at Matchbook:

1) Multiples involve the winnings for each leg being rolled over onto the next leg automatically, if the odds for this second leg have changed since the time the multiple was first placed (upwards or downwards) then the final payout might vary.

2) As was mentioned a little earlier on, we can only have 1x selection per sporting event in our multiples bet, this means if I was to add Chelsea to win versus Crystal Palace then I could not also add both teams to score (BTTS) to the multiples selection as well.

3) There is a maximum limit of only 10 selections in a multiples bet at Matchbook.

4) A maximum limit of 3 or 4 selections applies to Patent, Trixie, Lucky 15 and Doubles bets.

5) In the case of non-runners, multiples bets will automatically be reduced with the remaining legs still standing (e.g. a treble will then become a double and so on).

6) Finally, another major drawback with using multiples at Matchbook is that cash-outs are not supported!

Comparing Matchbook Multiples with Other Exchanges

To see the value on offer when placing multiples bets at Matchbook, we should look at the offerings from some other leading betting exchanges, in this case Betfair and Smarkets.

betfair acca

As can be seen above, when looking at Betfair we see the same accumulator bet made up of Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea has total odds of 3.39 versus just 3.21 at Matchbook. It should also be noted that Betfair also go above and beyond the current Matchbook offering and allow the cashing out of multiples bets up to and including those games which are in-play at the time (although given multiples at Betfair are handled by the sportsbook there is no guarantee as to the availability of this service).

Next, looking towards challenger exchange Smarkets and we see the same accumulator, again, built up of Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea like below:

smarkets acca

As per the screenshot above, this same accumulator bet has odds of 3.8 at Smarkets, noticeably higher than both Matchbook and Betfair for these same selections (although missing the cash-out functionality available at just Betfair out of these three choices).

Whilst all three providers are roughly in-line when it comes to what will finally be paid out should this ACCA be a winner, it is the case that Matchbook has the lowest odds of the three in this particular example.

NB - In addition to this, as well as having the highest payout in this case, Smarkets is also the only major betting exchange to allow accumulators both to be backed and laid!

Comparing Matchbook Multiples to the Bookies

It is, of course, very helpful to have the ability to place multiples bets whilst using a betting exchange, but how does this offering fare when compared to a more traditional bookie, in this case one of the leading high street and online bookies, William Hill!

william hill acca

As can be seen above, with total odds of 3.55, William Hill is very competitive on this same Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea accumulator when compared to Matchbook (who, as a quick reminder, offered odds of just 3.21 for the same bet).

As a leading bookie, William Hill also provide much more functionality to their “bet builder” style multiples betting product, this includes the ability to cash out both pre-match and in-play alongside regular promotions including boosts, free bets and “ACCA insurance” should just one leg of your accumulator let you down under certain circumstances.

Whilst it would be fair to say that Matchbook do have a solid and very useful multiples betting product, traditional bookies can still offer some great odds when it comes to accumulators alongside the regular promotions, insurances and free bets which have made them a mainstay for accumulator fans over many years!

Live Streaming and Match Stats

Unfortunately, as of writing this review, Matchbook has on offer only very limited live streaming options, these currently see the exchange covering only UK greyhound racing at selected tracks, these include:

  • Central Park

  • Doncaster

  • Crayford

  • Henlow

  • Harlow

  • Hove

  • Monmore

  • Romford

To be eligible for the live streaming service, a €2 / £2 / $2 bet must be placed on the selected event beforehand (this can be either a back or lay bet).

Whilst it is disappointing to see such limited live streaming options, especially compared to market leaders Betfair who offer free streaming of many popular sporting events, it does not necessarily detract from the overall experience of using the Matchbook betting exchange.

Colossus Jackpots at Matchbook

The Colossus Jackpots service is a pools based (tote) betting service available within the main Matchbook website itself.

matchbook colossus

Offering the ability to play solo or work in teams (syndicates), players can play one of the following four pools-based games from as little as just €0.20 per line:

Football Pick 4 (Correct Scores):

This game involves picking the correct score for 4 pre-chosen football games, should all four of these selections in any given line win then you will be awarded a share of the jackpot!

Football Pick 5 (Match Predictor):

The Pick 5 match predictor game involves picking the correct outcome for 5 individual selections within a given football match. As can be seen below, this group of selections could include the correct score, a penalty to be taken, a player to be sent off plus several other similar options:

matchbook football pick 5

Racing Pick 4 / 6 (Wins):

The Racing Wins jackpot involves picking 4 or 6 winning horses from a selection of predetermined horse races. This game is similar to the football based jackpots mentioned above and can be played form just €0.20 per line:

matchbook racing pick 6

Racing Pick 4 / 6 (Places):

Similar to the above jackpot game, the Racing Places jackpot is awarded for selecting 4 or 6 placed horses from a series of preselected races.

Overall, Colossus Jackpots makes for a nice addition to the Matchbook exchange offering and from just €0.20 / line is considerably cheaper than many other providers offering similar tote style games (typically at €1+ per line with many other providers).

The Matchbook Website & Smartphone Apps

A nicely designed website and smartphone app are key for any betting exchange provider and form a key part of the overall betting exchange experience.

matchbook website

Thankfully, as can be seen above, Matchbook has developed a visually appealing and easy to use website which makes finding any sport and placing bets quick and easy.

Backing up this strong design is an equally well designed and user friendly smartphone app currently available for both iOS and Android devices.

Matchbook Casino and Games

In addition to the betting exchange itself, Matchbook has also developed a good casino offering consisting of table games, live casino, slots and jackpot slots alongside other favourites including video poker and virtual sports to form a first rate casino offering.

matchbook casino

Favourite casino franchises including Red Tiger, Deal or No Deal, Megaways and Monopoly are available alongside many variations of slot machines, video poker games, jackpot games and many live casino games including:

  • Live Roulette (European and American)

  • Live Blackjack

  • Live Double Ball Roulette

  • Live Poker (Dealer Poker)

  • Live Baccarat

  • Monopoly Live

  • Dream Catcher

  • Plus many other live games...

Whilst exchange betting is clearly the main focus at Matchbook, it is great to see that an extensive casino offering with many popular and well known games is also available should it be required.

Managing Your Betting at Matchbook

Keeping track of betting activity, including any open bets, is simple and effective at Matchbook thanks to the well designed reporting system built-in to the website.

matchbook account

This reporting system, as can be seen above, helps keep track of both open bets as well as reporting on the betting history across multiple sports, thus giving insight into any potential profits and losses for the account overall.

Most bookies do offer some basic access to betting history, Matchbook, however, have gone much further than most in this regard and have built a very good reporting screen which makes it easy to see any active or settled bets and what potential winnings or losses might be expected for the account.
